Be a precinct committeeperson, a delegate--or both
Delegate
Committeeperson
How to File
DELEGATE--When you're a delegate to the state Democratic party convention, you represent Lake County voters at the "Big Dem Weekend" in Indianapolis in June. You'll meet other democrats from around the state, learn about political developments, and vote on the party's platform and candidates. Here's more about the "Big Dem Weekend."
COMMITTEEPERSON--"All politics is local" When you're a precinct committeeperson, you are the voice and face of the party to the people who live in your precinct.
A precinct is a geographic area that contains roughly 600 voters. Your job is to talk to the people in the precinct, encourage them to vote, register them to vote, and find out what their political concerns are. You communicate their concerns back to the official party organization. As a precinct committeeperson you also have the honor of voting in special elections. If an elected official leaves office before his or her term expires, precinct committeepeople of that person's political party elect his or her replacement until the next election. Being a precinct committeeperson can be as much or as little of a responsibility as you choose. If you want a political system that reflects your values, get started at the precinct level and make a difference.
The precinct committeeperson serves a 4-year term. The next elections for committeepeople will be in 2022.
HOW TO FILE--Both the delegate and committeeperson positions are elected positions. Like someone running for mayor, senator or president, you have to put your name on the ballot. Unlike someone running for a bigger position, you will usually not have to campaign for yourself. In fact, in many cases, no one will run against you--if that happens, your name doesn't even appear on the ballot! You win automatically. Congratulations!
For both positions, you need to fill out a "CAN-37" form (there's a link below). You complete the CAN-37 form, get it notarized, and turn it in to the Lake County Board of Elections before February 7, 2020. If you take it to the Board of Elections office at 2293 N Main Street, in Crown Point, the election workers will even notarize it for you. If you have questions, please call them at (219) 755-3000. Because the term for a committeeperson is four years, the only position a Democrat can run for in 2020 is convention delegate. You can download the CAN-37 form here. https://secure.in.gov/sos/elections/2395.htm See you at Big Dem Weekend!
